2024 International Energy Conservation Code (International Code Council Series) 1st Edition

The 2024 IECC addresses energy efficiency on several fronts including cost, energy usage, use of natural resources and the impact of energy usage on the environment.

The acronym IECC 2024 most commonly refers to the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code, a model code published by the International Code Council (ICC). It sets the minimum requirements for energy efficiency in residential and commercial buildings.

• Purpose: The code provides a national standard for energy-efficient construction, addressing aspects like a building's walls, insulation, lighting, and air leakage. The 2024 update aims for a 6–8% increase in efficiency over the previous version through new requirements.
• Development process: Unlike previous editions, the 2024 version was developed through a new standards process. Content was created by consensus committees of industry experts rather than by a vote of governmental members.
• Key changes:
  • More flexibility for builders: The updated code allows for more flexible pathways to compliance.
  • Future electrification: New homes with gas furnaces are now required to be wired for future electric heating and cooling systems.
  • Efficiency credits: The 2024 version introduces additional efficiency credits that builders can accumulate to meet compliance standards.
  • Updated insulation and sealing: The code includes updated requirements for insulation and air sealing around windows and doors.
